Did Hurricane Irene
or all these other hurricanes really come about because of Global Warming?
Al Gore seems to think so,
and now he says that one who denies global warming today is like being
a racist yesterday.
If anything unusual
happens in nature these days, whether it’s tornados or hurricanes, global
warming is often blamed.
Listen to this dire
warning: “There are ominous signs that the earth’s weather patterns have
begun to change dramatically, and that these changes may portend a drastic
decline in food production, with serious political implications for just
about every nation on earth. The evidence in support of these predictions
has now begun to accumulate so massively, that meteorologists are hard-pressed
to keep up with it.”
This sounds quite
grim. But the warning goes on: “Climatologists are pessimistic that political
leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climate change
or even to allay its effects. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult
will they find it to cope with climate change once the results become grim
reality.”
The scientists have
spoken: global warming is a fact. We just got to get all the politicians
to act before it’s too late.
There’s only one problem.
That dire prediction is from 1975 (from Newsweek, April 28), and
it’s talking about global cooling, which was all the rage back then.
Wow, how do we go from these
two totally different scenarios in just a couple decades? Scenario 1: The
earth is cooling too fast because of man’s activities. Scenario 2: anthropogenic
(man-made) global warming is wreaking havoc on the earth’s climate.
My wife from Norway
makes an interesting point. When she was in the Norwegian equivalence of
high school, in the 1970s, the “experts” said the world was cooling. And
there were three key remedies:
*population control;
*redistribution of
wealth from the rich nations to the poor nations;
*a world governing
body.
Jump ahead to the
21st century, and now we supposedly have man-made global warming.
What is it that the
high priests of global warming say is the key to dealing with the crisis?
They have three basic solutions:
*population control;
*redistribution of
wealth from the rich nations to the poor nations;
*a world governing
body.
All my life, I’ve
seen the vagaries of nature take their toll. I remember a snow storm in
the Chicago area where I grew up that shut down everything. To us, it was
kind of fun. Not only did we miss school, but we could toboggan down parts
of Mt. Pleasant Street.)
The snow storm came in January
where the week before we could play outside without wearing a coat. It
was crazy. That was in 1967.
Good thing they weren’t
blaming global cooling or global warming then.
Global warming has
become a tautology. If the weather’s too hot, that’s global warming. If
it’s too cold, that’s because of global warming.
What amazes me about
all this is that most people seem oblivious to the facts that some of the
raw data concerning global temperatures has been tampered with. The scandal
involving emails between global warming enthusiasts, including those at
East Anglia University in the UK, came out in 2009.
That scandal showed
that some scientists were deliberately playing with the data. Incredible.
How do the global
warming true believers maintain their credibility?
Yet, people like Michelle
Bachmann or Rick Perry are supposedly ignorant because they deny man-made
global warming.
I believe that in
the beginning God created the world. He made an earth that supports human
life. (The book and DVD, The Privileged Planet, provide compelling evidence
that the Creator uniquely shaped this planet for our life).
Anyway, I believe
God created a stable situation where there are various fluctuations of
heating and cooling. It has nothing to do with us.
As I said in a talk
I once gave a college that was recorded and aired on Cspan2 a few years
ago: “Do you know what’s experiencing global warming right now? The planet
Mars. The planet Mars is experiencing global warming. It’s because of the
sun. It has nothing to do with SUVs that people are driving.”
Did global warming
cause Irene or any of these recent hurricanes? A couple years ago, I asked
Max Mayfield, retired director of the National Hurricane Center, if there
was possibly any link between global warming and hurricanes? He said absolutely
not.
Overall, it seems
to me that what’s heating up more than the globe is some of the rhetoric
about man-made global warming.
