Leo Newcombe Obituary

icon Leo Newcombe, 93, former vice president and general manager of the Chicago Sun-Times and Daily News. Born in Faribault, Minnesota, in 1921, Leo graduated with a BA from the University of Minnesota, served as lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II and then earned an MBA from the University of Michigan in 1947. Leo married Ann Lombard in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1948. They moved to Winnetka, Illinois, in 1952 and had eight children. Leo and Ann were devout Catholics who loved to walk, dance, play bridge and travel. Beloved husband of the late Ann Newcombe, nee Lombard. Loving father of Raymond, M.D. (Sally), Richard (Carole), Robert (Debbie), Jerome (Kirsti), Mary Ann (Chuck) Veldman, John (Frances), Margaret Mary (Daniel) Sugrue and the late Douglas (Carolyn) Newcombe. Dear grandfather of Melissa; Jack and Sara; Laura; Courtney, Peter, Julie and Katherine; Eric and Annie; Jessica, Patricia and Andrew Veldman; Jonah; and Kevin, Vivian and Sean Sugrue. Proud great-grandfather of Scott and Lillian and Elizabeth. Kind uncle to many nieces and nephews. Caring brother of Lila, the late Marian, Howard, Francis and Jane. Visitation Friday, January 2, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral Saturday, January 3, 2015, from Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. (at Old Orchard Rd.), Skokie, to Saints Faith, Hope & Charity Church, 191 Linden St., Winnetka. Mass is at 10:00 a.m. Interment is at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 1850 N.
