We live in a time when there's only one acceptable prejudice in the world today, and that is anti-Christian bigotry. Too often on a variety of fronts—in movies, television programs, pop radio songs, public schools, courtrooms—there is an anti-Christian bias at work. We have forgotten the rich and strong Judeo-Christian tradition that has made the West great in the first place. Samuel Huntington, a professor at Harvard and director of the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies, wrote recently: "Western Christianity, first Catholicism and then Protestantism, is the single most important historical characteristic of Western civilization. Indeed, during most of its first millennium, what is now known as Western civilization was called Western Christendom." [Samuel P. We are heirs to a great civilization, thanks in large part to the Judeo-Christian tradition. Christianity and the Bible have positively impacted the value of human life, charity, education, the founding of America, civil liberties, the law, arts, music, literature, morality, society, economics, and even science! Every civilization must have a set of beliefs that act as a compass by which it is led through the fallen human condition to civility. These beliefs are to become manifest to all who are a part of a given society in the form of law. For this is the very thing by which civility is maintained. No other document was capable of such a task. Only God, through His written Word, could achieve such a universal feat. And this is the very foundation that God has granted us to build upon. He gave us liberty and justice, the very linch-pins of freedom.

In this country we are blessed with "free speech." Such was the outgrowth of a tattered gathering of pilgrims, seeking refuge from persecution in their homeland. They laid the foundation for such a principle, because they understood its importance. It is perhaps one of the greatest ironies of our time that the very thing that gave rise to free speech, the Holy Bible, is under siege daily by those who often block any public expression of Holy Writ. I'm thinking here about such groups as the ACLU (which some critics label as the Anti-Christian Liberties Union) and PAW (or People for the Atheist Way). Some critics point out that organizations like this are in favor of free speech—as long as they approve of that speech and conservative Christians need not apply! They will no doubt find, much to their chagrin, that once they have removed the Bible from schools and public forums, tyranny will ultimately fill the void. There are signs of that virtually every day, but the intelligentsia never seems to make the connection! They have thrown God out of the public schools, and in His place, they've had to install metal detectors. In closing, consider the words of an author more than 85 years ago, Joseph Nelson Greene. In the context he was writing about Christ and literature. But I think that what he says about Christ applies to Jesus and our world in virtually every phase, not just "the world of letters": There is a strange legend of a world that grew colorless in a single night. The color faded from the sky; the sea became pale and motionless; the green vanished from the grass and the color from the flowers; the fire died from the diamond, and the pearl lost its light. Nature put on her robes of mourning, and the people who lived there became sad and afraid. A world had lost its life and light. If tonight, with one sweep of the arm you brush from literature the Christ, the scenes and suggestions from His life, the spirit which He exhibited, the principles for which He stood, you would have a world made colorless in a night. It would be the world of letters, for Christ is the color thereof. [Joseph Nelson Greene, The Gospel in Literature (Cincinnati: Jennings and Graham/New York: Eaton and Mains, 1910), p. 100.]
