Many on the left today want to destroy the “electoral college.” Why? Some have even called it “racist.” Why? Kirsten Gillibrand, would-be Democrat presidential candidate, said, “Our democracy is built on the principle of one person, one vote. It can’t function until we restore that principle. It’s time to abolish the electoral college.” Critics counter: we’ve had the electoral college since the beginning of our constitutional republic. These anti-electoral college sentiments are beginning to become widely circulated. What’s the truth about it? Why did the founders create it in the first place?
